Brain Enzyme Critical in Blood Pressure Regulation

3 February 2009 No Comment

New research shows a specific enzyme is directly tied to blood pressure regulation and may become a key factor in controlling hypertension and lowering blood pressure.

The enzyme abbreviated ACE2 (Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) appears to inhibit the ability of receptors in the arteries to send blood pressure information to the central nervous system. Dr. Xia, PhD and lead author of the study reported, “We now have evidence that brain ACE2 plays a critical role in baroreceptor reflex function and , consequently, in the prevention of hypertension,”.
