Since the late 1990’s, the DASH diet has been promoted as the ideal diet for lowering blood pressure. The diet itself, called the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, calls for a reduction in red meats, sweets and artificial sugars, and emphasizes fruits and vegetables as well as a whole host of heart healthy foods. The full diet plan can be found at on the National Institutes of Health Website. But does this DASH diet work? What about simply reducing sodium intake?

In 2001 the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute completed a 14 week study comparing the effects of the DASH diet, lower sodium and the DASH diet plus lower sodium intake on a group of 412 adults from varying races both with and without hypertension. Weight was kept stable so as to not affect the results.

DASH Diet Alone

The DASH diet has been shown to reduce blood pressure by about 6 points systolic and 2 points diastolic for non-hypertensives compared to those eating the typical American diet. For those with high blood pressure, average drops reported are 7 mm Hg systolic and 3 mm Hg diastolic.

Eating Less Sodium

When changing from the average American diet of 3,300 milligrams a day of sodium to 1,500 milligrams, hypertensives have been shown to lower their systolic blood pressure by 8.3 mm Hg and 4.4 mm Hg diastolic. In those without hypertension the reductions were 5.4 mm Hg systolic and 2.8 mm Hg diastolic.

DASH Diet plus Eating Less Sodium

Combining the DASH diet with a daily sodium intake of less than 1,500 milligrams daily, has been shown to reduce blood pressure in those without hypertension by 7/4 mm Hg (systolic/diastolic) and for those with high blood pressure by 12/6 mm Hg.

Dr. Denise Simons-Morton a DASH co-author said, “Following the DASH diet and reducing the intake of dietary sodium are two non-drug approaches that work to control blood pressure,” according to the National Institutes of Health Press Release.

An exciting new article about isometric handgrip exercise and lowering blood pressure was released this month ahead of its scheduled printing in the journal Hypertension. The title of the article is Isometric handgrip exercise and resting blood pressure: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and was written by two prestigious researchers, Dr. George A. Kelley and Kristi S. Kelley.

The researchers analyzed three randomized controlled studies about isometric handgrip therapy (the foundation for Zona Plus therapy) and resting blood pressure. The analysis revealed an average drop of approximately 10% in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure after at least 4 weeks of isometric handgrip exercise.

This is the first article to make bold statements about the long term health implications of isometric handgrip exercise. For instance they wrote,

“Given the reduction in resting SBP observed in the current study, it would appear plausible to suggest that a reduction in the risk of mortality from coronary heart disease, stroke, and all-causes would be more than twice that observed from a reduction of 5mmHg.”

(Note that a reduction of 5mmHg systolic has been associated with decreased risk of mortality of 9% from coronary artery disease, 14% from stroke and 7% from all-causes)

The authors also mentioned that the decreased in SBP and DBP they observed the isometric handgrip studies were at least 3 times greater than those reported in another meta-analysis investigating aerobic exercise.

In the end the authors finished with,

“In conclusion, the results of this aggregate data meta-analysis suggest that IHG [isometric handgrip] exercise is efficacious for reducing resting SBP and DBP. However, the generalizability of these findings is limited given the small number of studies included. “

A new study to be published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology studied the effects of a single bout of isometric handgrip therapy on systolic blood pressure and the autonomic nervous system. Canadian researchers found that in healthy normotensive individuals a single session of Zona Plus therapy resulted in a brief, instantaneous reduction in systolic blood pressure and a change in the autonomic nervous system. It is hypothesized that it could be these changes that lead to the long term alterations in blood pressure and nervous system activity observed with long term use of the Zona Plus.

The article was accepted July 21, 2009 and it can be found via DOI 10.1007/s00421-009-1142-2.

Accidentally discovered by the U.S. Air Force in the 1960’s, the Zona Plus is an isometric handgrip therapy device which uses patented technology designed to optimize the natural blood pressure lowering effects of isometric handgrip therapy. According to the Harvard Health Letter, “Squeezing the grip for a few minutes a day has been shown to lower blood pressure as much as a first-line antihypertension drug.”

The microcomputer inside of the Zona Plus measures the overall handgrip strength of the user before every session and then designs a tailored routine. The routine takes a total of 12 minutes and involves a series of prolonged squeezes on the device at a specific percentage of the user’s overall hand strength. Users are prompted by a small screen on the device which tells them when to squeeze and when to rest, if they need to squeeze more or less, which hand to use, and it also times and scores the therapy session.

Would you like to learn more about how you can lower your blood pressure naturally with the Zona Plus? Visit www.zona.com.

Zona Plus therapy, when completed 5 days a week for about 8 weeks, consistently and satisfactorily lowers blood pressure naturally in more than 90% of users who purchase the device. Studies indicate that these results are gained without negative side effects and can naturally drop users’ blood pressure into the normal range (decreases of more than 20 points systolic are common).

Interview Transcript:

Doug (Good Day Health Co-host):
“If you are on needles and pins because you have a problem with your blood pressure, Dr. Ken and I have a solution. We have been talking off and on about this new product and the fellow who is responsible for it is Steve Wood who is the President and CEO of Zona health. So with all the conversation about it Ken, we thought it would be appropriate to have Steve here. I want to call him Dr. Wood. If he is not a doctor, he ought to be. Are you a doctor Steve?”

Steve Wood:
Chuckles. “No, thank you, but I am not.”

Doug:
In a jovial tone, “You can play one on the radio for a while with us, it’s okay.”

Steve Wood:
Laughing and with an air of good-humored sarcasm, “Oh, okay.”

Doug:
“So explain a little about how you came to create this thing. As I said we have been talking a lot about it, sending people online to zona.com where they can get the free 20 page high blood pressure guide. Dr. Ken, as a matter of fact, wrote the foreword to it. Why did you get involved in this?”

Dr. Ken (Cardiologist, MD, PhD, and Good Day Health Host):
“Because blood pressure is such a big problem in America and it is a preventable, treatable easy to treat problem and I want to help people avoid the number one killer, heart attacks, and the number one disabler, stroke, and also erectile dysfunction. All these problems can be prevented by getting the blood pressure under control.”

Doug:
“Steve, tell us a little bit about this. This is like the guy who liked the razor and bought all the razor blades.”

Steve Wood:
Chuckles. “The Gillette story, yes, yes it is. What happened with me was that I am a private pilot and you have to take a medical every two years. My doctor told me, “blood pressure is going up, make some lifestyle changes and if that does not work I am going to put you on drugs”. And I did not really want to be on drugs, there are side effects to them that I didn’t want.”

Doug:
“I have never met a patient who wanted to be on drugs, at least the ones I prescribe!”

Steve Wood:
Chuckles. “Exactly. So I looked for alternatives, couldn’t not find any until accidentally found this one, something that had been invented for pilots by pilots. And I tried it and by blood pressure dropped dramatically over 20 points. So, I thought there is something here that people need to know around the world that here is a way to treat this. And eventually my brother and I ended up with some friends buying the company.”

Doug:
“But Steve, what you did, which is unique, you went and invested in the research before you really brought this to the American public. Tell us about all the research that shows that this is safe and effective.”

Steve Wood:
“Oh thank you Dr. Ken. That is probably the biggest “bugaboo” for me, I want to know something is credible and it is very important that you do clinical research, that you go out scientifically get independent University’s and clinics to do this, and Zona Plus in case that’s what we did. There is over 10 published journal articles at this point that show 100% success.”

Doug:
“And these are not “comic book” publications, or what doctors call “throw away” publications, these are real peer-reviewed publications.”

Steve Wood:
“Exactly. And they are not just even in the U.S., International Journal of Cardiology has this, Medicine Science Sports and Exercise has it, Physiology Today; there are a lot of them.”

Doug:
“And the Harvard medical letter really put this on the map. The Harvard medical letter is so critical they only talk favorably about evidence based products and that are safe and effective, and they gave this a fantastic review.”

Steve Wood:
“Yeah. They did a full page article on it and said “what have you got to lose?”

Doug:
“Wow. So how does it work? That is really what people are more interested in knowing, now that we know the research shows that it works, how does it work?”

Steve Wood:
“That’s a great question Doug. What you do, what it is, is a small computer built into a handheld device with a display on top so you can see what you are doing. It guides you through a series of forearm contractions, what is call isometrics, takes about 12 minutes once a day only 8 minutes of which you are actually doing anything (there is 4 minutes of rest) and what you do is squeeze it with your right hand as hard as you can- that sets your strength for the day. The beauty is it works for somebody that 20 years old or 90 years old because it is measuring you. It then calculates a two, two minute therapies for each hand as you work your way through it, then you just sit there statically, you are not squeezing in and out, you sit there keeping the ball centered effectively, just like a pilot would, keeping that ball centered.”

Doug:
“So it’s a preventative, as well as something that is a treatment.”

“I was surprised to find that one of our researchers, a leader of a very well known medical school, he does not have high blood pressure. He says, “What I have found I am going to start using this for the rest of my life”, and he does!”

Discover how a fighter jet led to lower blood pressure.

G-LOC?

Gravitational Induced Loss of Consciousness. This is better known as blackout and it led to lower blood pressure. It is a problem with modern fighter aircraft The F-16, commissioned by the United States Air Force, implemented a new technology that changed the maneuverability of combat aircraft. This computer-controlled technology (fly by wire) increased the ability of planes to turn, twist and perform contortions in the air. In fact pilots say that you don’t fly an F-16, but that it flies you! This all translates to a plane that increases the demand on the pilot’s body—namely blackout from G-Force. But blackout led to accidental discovery.
G-Suite and Hand Grip and an Accident

To control blackout researchers developed the G-Suit. Simply, the G-Suit helps to keep blood in the brain and from pooling in the feet. But, the F-16 was proving that it was a bit too much and more was needed. Hence our researchers were called. They increased G-Force tolerance with a computer-monitored handgrip, job done. But, they found that some of the pilots had a steady drop in blood pressure. Our researchers were able to take this data and duplicate it with lots of people, young and old. Over and over. For twenty years. The idea worked, but getting into your hand, literally, proved to be a problem.
From the size of a house to the palm of your hand.

When researchers were studying this G-Force technology in 1969 they had the new cutting edge technology of computers to help them design the perfect protocol for the Zona Plus therapy. However, these computers were huge and the technology had not been proven. Over the next three decades as computers began to shrink, researchers were able to study the Zona Plus therapy and maximize its benefits. The result was a hand held device that can be used anywhere, anytime and utilizes a therapy that reduces blood pressure on average of 27 points.

The Zona Plus is a small handheld device that can lower your blood pressure without drugs or other supplements, and has no negative side effects, when used just 12 minutes a day.

Accidentally discovered from US Air Force research on pilot stress, the Zona Plus is the breakthrough product to lower blood pressure without drugs or negative side effects. The Zona Plus has seen positive reports published in a dozen medical journals, and is an amazing 93%+ effective in lowering blood pressure in clinical trials. Natural, safe and effective, the Zona Plus is considered a major breakthrough for hypertension sufferers, who want to control their blood pressure without the negative side effects of drugs.

“It is an honor to have Zona Health as a sponsor with us for the 2009 season. With the stress of today’s economy and other issues, it is refreshing to have a product like the Zona Plus, that will help control high blood pressure without the use of supplements or prescription drugs, and can save an average person over $1,000 a year.” stated car owner Rick Ware.

Zona Health will be the primary sponsor for the Camping World 300 at Daytona International Speedway on February 14th and the Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on February 28th.
