Possible Hypertension Gene Discovered

30 December 2008 No Comment

Research by the University of Maryland School of Medicine has discovered a gene which likely plays a key role in determining blood pressure.

DNA analysis of 542 Old Order Amish from Lancaster County, P.A. led researchers to identify a link between the STK39 gene and blood pressure. They were able to confirm these results by performing the same analysis to five other groups in both the U.S. and Europe.

The STK39 gene is located on chromosome 2. It plays a key role in determining blood pressure through the production of a protein which dictates how the kidneys process salt. One variation of this gene in particular was associated with higher blood pressure. It is estimated that roughly 20 percent of Caucasians have this variation of the STK39 gene.
